Classics professor Osman Umurhan and Albuquerque’s own “Metal Mayor” Tim Keller thrash out the merits of metal music, the Greek and Roman worlds, and community over his co-edited volume Classical Antiquity in Heavy Metal Music.

Whether you dream about reading Homer or Vergil in the original or want to understand how ancient Greece and Rome continue to exert a powerful influence upon contemporary cultures, Classical Studies offers a comprehensive program of classical languages, cultures, and traditions with several options to choose from.

The major features two concentrations: 1. Students who wish to engage in a variety of approaches and disciplines (such as History, Art History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies) choose the Civilization concentration; 2. Students whose main focus is to read classical works in the original Greek or Latin choose the Language concentration. There are also minors in Classical Studies, Greek, and Latin.

Study of the ancient world offers both intellectual and practical benefits. Many of our majors and minors pursue either a career in law, medicine, library science, popular fiction, Foreign Service, finance, or graduate study at the postgraduate level, and much more! Some are famous.

M.A. in Comparative Literatures and Cultural Studies with Classical Languages Concentration

The Department of Languages, Cultures, and Literatures at the University of New Mexico offers an MA in Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies, with a concentration in Classical languages. Our program in Classics aims to train students who not only have a proficiency in the ancient languages, but also have a broader understanding of the ancient world, including contemporary approaches to the Classics. By the time our students graduate, they will have completed an additional three years of Greek and Latin (including survey courses in both languages), studied literary and critical theory, engaged in graduate-level research while writing a master’s thesis, and gained experience as Instructors and Teaching Assistants. Our students have gone on to Ph.D. programs in Classics or related fields at top-ranked programs or have found employment teaching classical languages at secondary schools across the country. All our students are guaranteed 2 years of support, and students in good standing are eligible for continued funding for a 3rd year. Our program support takes the form of Teaching Assistantships teaching first and second year Latin and Greek, and grading for large lecture courses in Classical Civilization. Our most successful applicants have 3 years of Latin and 2 of Greek when they apply.
